2024 Scholarship Winners

Western Scholarship Winner: Ainsley Crist

Ainsley Crist is a rising junior from Colorado pursuing a double major in Geosciences and Environmental Studies from Wellesley College. Since learning of the Gold King Mine Spill when she was in eighth grade, she has dedicated her studies to the threats abandoned mining operations pose to environmental and human health and the disproportionate impacts of these operations on Indigenous and other marginalized communities. At Wellesley, she serves as a mentor and learning assistant in the Geosciences department and has excelled in the department’s most challenging courses. She is also a peer mentor in a geohealth research group and lead student researcher on the Tar Creek Superfund Site project. She is grateful to her mentor and advisor, Professor Daniel Brabander, who continually supports her and afforded her the opportunity to travel to the site to conduct field work with Local Environmental Action Demanded (LEAD) Agency, connect with residents and tribal leaders, and present at the annual Tar Creek Conference in October, 2023. Her ongoing research of Tar Creek would not be possible without the generosity and expertise of Rebecca Jim and Martin Lively at the LEAD Agency. Through this collaboration, Ainsley conducts laboratory analysis to understand the extent of lead, zinc, and cadmium contamination on a temporal and spatial scale as well as the geomobility of these elements and how it impacts public health. Her research combines her passions of geosciences and environmental justice for marginalized communities, both of which she will dedicate the remainder of her undergraduate studies, future graduate studies, and career to

Eastern Recipient - Derek Rauh, University of Cincinnati

Derek Rauh is a dedicated senior at the University of Cincinnati, where he is completing his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. With a strong academic background and practical experience, Derek has shown a profound commitment to environmental sustainability and the betterment of small communities.

Derek's academic journey has been marked by a rigorous curriculum that includes key courses such as Environmental Engineering, Soil Mechanics, and Sustainable Site Design. These courses have equipped him with the technical skills necessary for effective reclamation and restoration of lands impacted by mining activities.

Throughout his education, Derek has gained valuable hands-on experience through multiple co-op positions with esteemed firms such as Advanced Civil Design, Choice One Engineering, and CESO Inc. At Advanced Civil Design, Derek managed weekly site inspection reports for large warehouse sites, honing his organizational and communication skills. His role at Choice One Engineering involved working with the surveying team to learn more about the industry and seeing how engineering designs are applied to the real world. At CESO Inc., Derek was involved in various site development projects, which enhanced his proficiency in AutoCAD and project management.

Derek is actively involved in various student organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Construction Student Association (CSA), where he has held leadership roles and engaged in numerous professional development activities. His participation in the Contech Stormwater Competition and efforts to engage his classmates in the competition underscores his dedication to fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.

In addition to his academic and professional pursuits, Derek is deeply committed to community service. He has actively participated in events organized by Habitat for Humanity and NC4K. His involvement in these volunteer activities reflects his dedication to making a positive impact on his community and the environment.

In his free time, Derek enjoys playing his acoustic guitar, going on walks with his fiancée, and traveling and camping to new places in the United States with his large family and close circle of friends. He particularly enjoys hiking and kayaking, activities that allow him to appreciate and connect with the natural world he is committed to preserving. As he embarks on the next chapter of his career, Derek is determined to contribute to the advancement of sustainable engineering practices and make a positive impact on the communities he serves.

Mid-Continent Recipient - Sydney Hulvey
Sydney is a senior at Pittsburg State University in Kansas majoring in Biology. She was raised along the Weir-Pittsburg coal seam in southeast Kansas and grew up seeing what the aftermath of coal mining does to an area. In school, she found an interest in native plants and went on to intern at the Surface Mining Unit in the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. At this internship she was able to see the before, during, and after of reclamation projects on the abandoned mine lands. This is Sydney’s third year with the same internship program, and she is continuing her work of performing botanical surveys on native vegetation plantings on the reclaimed mine sites. She wants to see all these affected areas returned to a safe habitat that is filled with vegetation and landscapes that are useable by wildlife and the public.
